Grimshaw was born in England and became a football and basketball player at Brown. He moved on to the BAA, playing with Providence. In the summer of 1947, he stepped on a nail and had to get a tetanus shot. The injection greatly affected his shot and he was done playing. He was an assistant football coach at Tufts when he was approached to take the basketball coaching job in Puerto Rico, which he accepted and stayed there until he had the opportunity to return to Tufts. He took the freshman job at Tufts, and was later promoted to the varsity squad, where he stayed for 18 seasons.
