Born to Charles and Mattie Halbert in Albany, Texas, Chick grew up in New Mexico, and attended West Texas Teachers College (now West Texas A&M). He was too tall to serve in the military during World War 2 (he was accidentally listed as 5'9 on his army paperwork, but was discharged when he showed up at his regular 6'9 height.) The center played five seasons in the BAA/NBA. He and his wife, Jean (1919-2007) eventually moved to Washington where he worked as a truant officer, realtor and insurance agent.
