After playing with the Ironmen, Melvin went on to coach at St. Bonaventure, turning the college team into a nationally-ranked program. From there he went to Toledo, where he coached for 11 years.
Melvin died in 2004 after suffering from dementia for many years.
He married Mary Jean in 1950 and they had two sons.
