Born to Horace and Bertha Funk, Walt served in the Merchant Marines and Navy Reserve during World War 2. He graduated from Penn State and played basketball for the Lancaster Roses. He became a teacher, coach and principal at Scott HS in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, before being named the basketball coach at West Chester University.

Funk had four children.
