A leading scorer at St. Joseph's, Butz collegiate career was interrupted by World War 2, in which he served proudly as a member of the Army Corps of Engineers. After the war, he finished his education and played pro basketball for a few seasons. He moved to Florida in 1958 and taught and coached at various Catholic school around St. Petersberg. He was also an avid tennis player.

Norm and his wife, Ellen, had a son and two daughters.
