Irv served in the U.S. Army during World War 2.

In January of 1948, the Bullets traded Rothenberg to the Bombers for Grady Lewis. St. Louis would sell him to the Knicks just prior to the 48-49 season.

He was married to Gloria and they had a son and a daughter. He later remarried to Esther.
