Munroe served in the navy during World War 2. He was a Rhodes Scholar who later became a lawyer and the CEO of Phelps Dodge.

He married Helen Taylor in 1945, with that union ending in divorce in 1964. He remarried to Elinor Bunnin in 1969 and had two sons.
