Born to William and Blanch Neat, Lyle went to Butler for basketball, and while there was involved in an auto accident which his car collided head first with another car. Classmate and football player Frank Celarak sustained head injuries and lost an eye. Neat only suffered minor injuries.
Neat received a Purple Heart while in the U.S. Army during World War 2, and later became a junior high and high school teacher in Speedway, Indiana.
Neat was married to Marion Teagarden and they had a son, Scott.
