Born to Andrew and Tekla Sotnyk, Emil attended Ford City High School before enrolling in VMI, where he played football and baseball as well as basketball. After graduating with a degree in civil engineering, he entered the army, and while serving in Germany, met his future wife, Margaret Kasper, a German-English translator. He returned to Pennsylvania after the war, and briefly played professional basketball for Youngstown. Also a skilled bowler, Sotnyk moved his family to Toledo in 1966, and died of bone cancer in 2004.
He and his wife had six children.
