Born in Chicago to John and Catherine Fergus Butler.

After graduating from Notre Dame, Butler completed the V7 program at Columbia before heading to the U.S. Navy, serving in the South Pacific. He played for three teams in the NBL before taking a job with Commercial Shearing and Stamping in Youngstown, where he stayed for 35 years until retiring in 1982.

He married Dorothy White (d. 2013) on April 21, 1945 and they had nine children; Kathleen, Charles, Michael, Patricia, John, Thomas, Margaret, Eileen and Mary Kelly.
