After becoming WVY's first All-American in basketball, Scotty Hamilton served in the U.S. Navy during World War 2. He played a little bit of pro basketball, but coach at Welch High School before taking the head coaching job for the Washington & Lee basketball team. He would continute to work in education at the high school level, coaching football for many years as well as working as an athletic director at Broadway High School in Virginia. His like journey would eventually take him to Nigeria, serving as an assistant professor in Ohio University's Overseas Project.
