Born in Blackwell, Oklahoma, to Fred and Emma Martin, Martin made a name for himself as a star on the successful Phillips Oilers AAU squad. He found himself with the Wilmington Bombers while out east serving in the military. Martin was employed with Phillips Petroleum until his 1982 retirement.

He was married to Betty Jean Randall (1917-2005) and they had a son and a daughter.
