Born in rural Michigan, his family moved to Toledo where Fred played baseball, basketball and football at Woodward HS. He played pro and semi-pro basketball as well as semi-pro football in the early 1930's. He would go on to work at AP Parts company for many years. He died in 1978 following a brief illness.
His brother, Amos Jacobs, would go on to be a very popular actor and entertainer in Hollywood under the stage name Danny Thomas (which makes actress Marlo Thomas Fred's niece). The two of them were instrumental in the building of a St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Tennessee.
