Born to Harry and Evelyn Gerken, Freddie grew up in Union Hill, New Jersey, and would later play pro basketball with the Union City Reds (The town of Union Hill merged with West Hoboken in 1925 to become Union City). After five season with the Reds, including when the team moved from the Metropolitan League to the ABL and being named "Union City Reds" to "Jersey Reds," Gerken went over to play with the Visitations. He would serve in the military during World War 2, and played for a few independent teams around the Atlantic seaboard while serving. Gerken eventually moved to New Mexico, where he died in 1984. Lt. Col. Gerken is interred at Arlington National Cemetery.
Freddie was married to Rose Ann.
