Born in New York to Adolph and Dora Gotthoffer, Shikey was high school classmates with baseball Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg (they shared the same birthdate, too). He did not play basketball in college due to him playing semi-pro basketball. He went on to play many seasons with the SPHA's, being named the ABL MVP in 1935-36. He was one of the top point scorers during his time in the league and the league's highest-paid player, making over $100 a game at one point. During World War 2, Shikey worked at Wright Aeronautics and helped build B-21 bombers.
