Lentz went to Baltimore Poly, where he played basketball in his senior year and has selected captain despite having never played before. He would go on to play at St. John's College in Annapolis and after graduating, he served in the U.S. Army. After World War 1, he would return to Maryland and take up professional basketball, playing for 8 seasons before going into teaching and coaching. He would coach baseball, basketball and football at St. John's for 8 seasons before taking his coaching skills to West Point. He was recommissioned for World War 2, serving in Northern Africa. After World War 2, he taught mathematics before retiring in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
He married Pauline Raabe and they had four sons and a daughter.
