Born to Romanian immigrants Morris and Sophia (b. 1873) Askowitz, Sam played basketball at Northern HS before playing pro and semi-pro basketball around Detroit for many years. When the Hed Aids joined the MBC, Askowitz went with them but after being released early in the season, he went across the Detroit River to play with the Windsor entry in the league. In 1944, Askowitz moved to Miami where he owned apartment rental units in Miami Beach. He had changed his last name to Ascott at some point.

He married Lorietta Michalski in 1935 and they had a son and a daughter.
