Born to Charles and Blanche Harper, Marcus grew up in Peoria, lettering in track, baseball, basketball and football in high school. He would go on to play basketball in the ABL for three years, and later with the House of David during the Depression.

Mark married Faye Greenwalt (1901-1988) and they had one son and one daughter.
