Jordan played basketball at Notre Dame and he went to coach Mt. Carmel with a three year interruption to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War 2. He coached at Loyola University for one season before heading to Notre Dame, where he racked up 199 wins and six NCAA tourney births.

Johnny married Eileen Moreland (1917-1980) in 1958.
