Born to David and Mary Trosper, Joe played one year at Oklahoma A&M under Henry Iba before tranferring to OCU. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in history, Trosper served in the U.S. Navy during World War 2. He played some pro basketball after the war before becoming an insurance adjuster as well as a youth coach. Trosper was 90 when he died in 2011.
He was married to Dorothy O'Brien (1921-2001) in 1947 and they had a daughter and three sons.
