Born to William and Ava Borton, Norm played football, basketball, and ran track while at Alma. After playing for various pro and semi-pro teams around Detroit, he returned to Alma where he was head coach for two seasons. (Some places say he coached nine years, so seven of those may have been as an assistant, but school media guide only shows him at the helm of the team for two seasons.)
Norm married Reeva Davis in 1946 and they had one daughter.
