Born in Barnesville, Ohio, to John and Grace Whitlinger. Whitlinger has an three-sport star at
Zanesville High School in Ohio. He went to Ohio State to play
basketball, where he led the Big Ten in scoring. He graduated in 1936,
and earned his MBA in 1940, playing 13 games with Akron Firestone in the
NBL in that inaugural season. In the 1960's, he became a dedicated
tennis coach and coached three national champions in his family alone.
The Whitlinger Family was the UTSA National Tennis Family of the Year in
1987.
Whitlinger married Naomi Backes (1915-2007) on October 11, 1941, and the couple had three children; Warren, Wendy and John.
