From Twelve Mile, Indiana, Swank was the son of John and Nancy Swank. He went to Indiana Central University, which is now the University of Indianapolis. Served in the army during World War 2. In 1952, he became assistant basketball coach at Southport High School in Indianapolis. He died in Greenwood, Indiana, at 87 years of age.
