Birk was born in North Dakota and starred at UND. After playing basketball, he served in the US Army in World War 2 and afterwards moved to Whittier, California, where he taught and coached in the Montebello school district for 45 years. He died there of cancer in 2000.
Birk married Stella Forland (1916-2003) and the couple had three daughters; Kristine Perry, Lisa Ajir and Genelle Birk (dec.).
