Smith was born in Pittsburgh and went to Bellvue High School. He played college ball at Pitt ('33) and was named All-American in his senior year. He played a season for Pittsburgh in the NBL, and supposedly played one game for Akron Firestone in the next season (unconfirmed). He became a dentist and remained in the Pittsburgh area until his death.
