Zunic was born to Croatian immigrants in the coal mine areas of Pennsylvania. He attended GW and entered the military after college to serve his country in World War 2. He played a couple years of pro ball before staying on at Dow as a salesman. He then turned to coaching, taking an assistant job at UMass before the Head Coach job opened at Boston University. After seven seasons, he moved to Massachusetts. He was fired after four years because of his constant hostility with the officials. After coaching at UMass, he stayed on the faculty until he retired in 1990 and moved to Florida.

He was married to Janice Winslow (who died three months before his passing) had three daughters.
