Jerry Bush was born in Brooklyn and attended Erasmus High School. After playing college basketball at St John's, he went on to play ten years professionally before moving to coaching. While coaching at Toledo, it was discovered that three of his players were point shaving. Although Bush was not involved, he left to take the coaching job at Nebraska, where he stayed 9 seasons. He retired from coaching and went on to sell insurance until his death from a heart attack while going for a walk.
Bush married Asta (1918-1992) and had three daughters, Bonnie, Karen and Jane. His cousin was Detroit Eagles player Jake Ahearn. His grandson, Fred Hoiberg, played for ten seasons in the NBA with the Indiana Pacers, Minnesota Timberwolves and the Chicago Bulls.
