The Pistons improved on their 1951-52 season, finishing over .500 and in third place in the Western Division. They upset Rochester in the division semis, including a 2-point win in the deciding game. They battled hard in the Western Finals, taking eventualy champion Minneapolis to Game 5 before losing.
