Gino Sovran

Gino Sovran

Born:
December 17, 1924
Windsor, ON, Canada

Died:
June 26, 2016
Royal Oak, MI

Career
1941-42 Kennedy Collegiate - Windsor, ON (High School)
1942-43 Assumption College - Windsor (College) - now University of Windsor
1943-44 Assumption College - Windsor (College) - now University of Windsor
1944-45 Assumption College - Windsor (College) - now University of Windsor
1945-46 University of Detroit (College)
1946-47 Toronto Huskies (BAA)

Born in Canada, Gino Sovran was a track athlete in high school, which helped him to pick up basketball quite easily. In his three years at Assumption (now the University of Windsor), he scored over 1000 points and was one of the better known college athletes in Canada. The cancellation of the 1944 Olympics due to World War 2 prevented Gino from his desire to play in the Olympics. After graduating from Assumption, he ventured over to the University of Detroit where he enrolled in the engineering school. He wound up leading the Titans in scoring.
In 1946, Sovran discovered that his basketball eligibility had run out due to his time at Assumption, despite being in a different country and collegiate organization. As the fall semester was coming to an end, Sovran, like most engineering students, was facing his co-op semester where students work in the industry for a semester to gain real-world experience, and then return to college to continue their degree program. Sovran was approached by the Toronto Huskies of the newly-formed BAA to try-out for the team. The Huskies, lead by New Yorker Ed Sadowski, had stocked his team largely with cronies from the Big Apple, but felt that a few Canadian players would be a good drawing card for the team. Along with fellow Assumption graduate (and Italian-Canadian) Hank Biasatti, Sovran signed with the Huskies to play for his co-op semester.

Used sparingly, Sovran was informed late in December that he was being let go from the team, which was fine with him, since he was do to return to classes in January of 1947. He graduated from the University of Detroit and went on to the University of Minnesota where he got his doctorate in engineering. He worked at General Motors in Warren, Michigan, for 30+ years as a research engineer and was still writing technical papers for the automotive industry as he approached 90 years of age. He often expressed that his only regret was to never be able to represent his country on the court in the Olympics, as well as never taking the time to see George Mikan play despite being in Minneapolis at the time Mikan played there. Despite his brief professional basketball career, he took great pride in his accomplishment as an engineer and knew that if he had continued to pursue basketball, he would not have been in Minnesota to meet Kathryn, who would be his loving wife for many years until her passing. They had three sons and a daughter, of whom he was not shy about expressing his pride.

When Dr. Sovran died in June of 2016, he was the last surviving member of the Toronto Huskies.

Charley Hoefer

Charles Henry "Dutch" Hoefer
born Adolph Hoefer

Born:
September 16, 1921
Hanau, Germany

Died:
June 12, 1983
Sioux Falls, SD

Career
1937-38 Newtown High School - New York (High School)
1939-40 Queens College (College)
1940-41 Queens College (College)
1941-42 Wilmington Bombers (ABL)

1942-43 Camden/Brooklyn Indians (ABL)
1943-44 Wilmington Bombers (ABL)
1943-44 Wateford Pros (Independent)
1944-45 Boston Coast Guard (Military)
1945-46 Wilmington Bombers (ABL)
1945-46 Hartford Pros (NEBL)
1946-47 Toronto Huskies (BAA)
1946-47 Boston Celtics (BAA)
1947-48 Saratoga Indians (NYSL)
1948-49 Trenton Tigers (ABL)
1948-49 Schenectady Packers (NYSL)
1949-50 Queens McDermott All-Stars (Independent)
1949-50 Long Island Bombers (Independent)

Hoefer has always been a mystery to me, and it's probably because his previously reported birthdate (July 12, 1917) is not correct. There is other information out there in sports encyclopedias that is not accurate either. Allow me to explain.

Hoefer attended Queens College. He joined the Wilmington Bombers in 1941-42 and helped lead them to the ABL championship. (A couple on discrepancies occur here. Other sources have him playing for the Washington franchise of the ABL here, but as the News Journal article from December 18, 1941 and Morning News from November 7, 1945 indicate, he was indeed with Wilmington those years. Also worth noting is that the Morning News article states Charley Hoefer was merely 19 when playing with the Bombers in 1941. This contradicts the 1917 birthdate (and begins to coincide with census records from the time. I will get to that). That's why I dismiss 1917 as the birth year. According to the article, he served in the South Pacific in the Coast Guard before returning to the Bombers.

So now going with this information above, I had new doors opened. First off, being he was born in Germany and supposedly named Adolph, I pretty much assumed that when he joined the Coast Guard, he went by Charles or Charley (his middle name is reported in many places to be Charles, and he is called Charley in the articles about his ABL days). The name Adolph could not have been a popular moniker in the service at that time. Searching through military records, I found a Charles Hoefer born in 1921. The branch was the Coast Guard, and he was released November 7, 1945, the same day Wilmington ran the article saying that Hoefer was returning to the team. Now this guy is buried in South Dakota, but was born in Germany, born to Hugo and Ann Metzler. The full name is Charles Henry Hoefer. It may sound like the wrong guy, but his SSN was issued in Connecticut, so his family was out east at some point. A quick search of the census records shows that there was an Adolph Hoefer in Queens in 1930 and 1940. Parents names? Yep. Hugo and Anne.

We got him.

Born in Hanau, Germany, in 1921, the Hoefer family immigrated to the United States in 1926, settling in Queens, New York. Hoefer went to high school at Newtown before enrolling at Queens College. He played basketball at Queens before playing professionally with team like the Wilmington Bombers of the American Basketball League. He served his country during World War 2 with the Coast Guard, and after his discharge, returned to the hardwood. He was a member of the Toronto Huskies, playing in the first BAA/NBA game on November 1, 1946. With the Toronto team faltering in that inaugual season, coaching changes lead to Hoefer being shipped off to the Celtics. After that season, he wound back east, playing in the American, Eastern and New York leagues. He retired from playing and started working with the Department of Agriculture, which eventually moved him to Minneapolis/St Paul in Minnesota. In 1969, he moved to South Dakota, where he lived until his death in 1983.

Charley and his wife, Beverly (d. 2008), had a son and a daughter.

Roy Hurley

Roy Leonard Hurley

Born:
August 12, 1922
Indianapolis, IN

Died:
October 14, 1993
Indianapolis, IN

Career
Arsenal Technical High School - Indianapolis (High School)
1945-46 Indianapolis Kautskys (NBL)
1946-47 Toronto Huskies (BAA)
1947-48 Syracuse Nationals (NBL)
1947-48 Tri-Cities Blackhawks (NBL)

After graduating from Arsenal Tech, Hurley served in the U.S. Navy during World War 2. He enrolled at Indiana University after his service, but was recruited by the Kautskys to join the NBL team. He went on the the Toronto Huskies for the inaugural season of the BAA, playing in the first BAA game in history. He returned to the NBL the next season. In 1950 he began working with Unified Funds Inc, staying there for 20 years. He worked as a marketing rep for the Indiana Pacers and as an assistant to the president for the Indianapolis Ice of the International Hockey League. Hurley died in 1993.

Roy Hurley is listed on other sites and encyclopedias as having attended Murray State. This appears to be from confusing Herb Hurley with Roy Hurley. Herb was a star at Murray State during World War 2, whereas Roy's obituary in the Indianapolis Star says absolutely nothing about Murray State. Roy Hurley does not appear on the Murray State all-time roster.
