Brother of fellow pro player Bob Fitzgerald.
Born to Richard and Emma Fitzgerald, From Queens, Dick went to Fordham and then into the military. He played professionally in the ABL until joining the Toronto Huskies in the BAA. When head coach and player Ed Sadowski quit the team, Lew Hayman coached a game before Fitzgerald took over on an interim basis. The Huskies won two of the three games Fitzgerald coached, before former Major League Baseball player Red Rolfe was named the head coach, which he held for the remainder of the season.
Fitzgerald died at the young age of 47, but I cannot find the circumstances behind this premature death.
