Milton was born in Jenkins, Kentucky, to Michael G. and Polexini Papanghi Ticco, Milton played basketball and baseball at UK. After serving in the Army during World War 2, he played minor league baseball in the Reds and Dodgers organization, while playing professional basketball in the off-season.

After his athletic endeavors, he worked in sales. He was married to Ramona Ford and they had two sons.

Born to Andrew and Tekla Sotnyk, Emil attended Ford City High School before enrolling in VMI, where he played football and baseball as well as basketball. After graduating with a degree in civil engineering, he entered the army, and while serving in Germany, met his future wife, Margaret Kasper, a German-English translator. He returned to Pennsylvania after the war, and briefly played professional basketball for Youngstown. Also a skilled bowler, Sotnyk moved his family to Toledo in 1966, and died of bone cancer in 2004.

He and his wife had six children.

A baseball and basketball star at Wittenberg, Shannon joined the U.S. navy right out of college, passing on a contract with the Cleveland Indians. After the war, he played briefly for the Youngstown Bears before becoming one of the more celebrated collegiate coaches in Ohio history, becoming Ohio Wesleyan's winningest coach.

He and his wife, Mary (d. 2006), had four sons. His eldest son, Frank, tragically died of a head injury suffered during high school football practice in 1960. He was only 15.

Born to Edward and Ethel Sattler, "Slats" was a basketball star at OSU before turning to the pro game for a couple seasons. Afterwards, he worked with his father at the family business, Sattler Orchards, before working in the insurance business.

Sattler died of a heart attack in his home on the morning of July 11, 1971, at 54 years of age. He was married to Mary and they had 4 daughters.

Born to Edward E. (1884-1969) and Mabel Wolfe (1886-1981) Moeller, Ed played basketball at Willis High School and later at Ohio State. During his senior year at OSU, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and Moeller enlisted as soon as he graduated. After the war, he played pro basketball with the Tri-Cities Blackhawks and the Youngstown Bears in the NBL. He worked as a salesman and commercial artist before retiring and moving to North Carolina.

Ed married Maxin Crone in 1948 and they had a son, Mark, and a daughter, Maxine (d. 2014).

After helping Wheeling HS to the WV State Championships in 1936 and 1937, Mehen moved on to the University of Tennessee where he was an All-American. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War 2 where his heel was shattered by a mortar shell in Europe, he played for Youngstown and Toledo in the NBL. When the Toledo franchise moved to Waterloo, Iowa, Mehen decided to stay in Toledo where he took employment as an appliance and furniture salesman.

Mehen's younger brother Dick played with him at Tennessee, and later for the Jeeps.

He married Lucille on May 31, 1942 and had two daughters, Andrea and Sandra.

He started as a night-shift warehouse worker, and rose to become the industrial relations manager. He had a teaching certificate from Wilson College, and taught elementary school during the day when he was working the night shift at ComEd. He retired from there in 1983, and became a member of the Chicago Board of Education.

Farrow died of congestive heart failure in 2003.

He was married to Ruth (d. 2003) in 1947 and they had a son, William, and a daughter, Dolores.

This was a very good search, even if I do pat myself on the back. (Sure hope I am right.)

Knew the name. John Wright. Ultra-common. Knew his nickname, "Doc." Knew he played for the Bears, and allegedly went to George Washington. That's it. However, I found no evidence of him at GW. I  found an obscure article in the Vidette Messenger that gave me his hometown. From there, went to Family Search and found one John Wright of that age, in Middletown. Was able to get birth and death information. I am 99% sure we have our guy.


I'd like to see an obituary to be 100%, but I am confident enough to make it so.

Born to Charles and Jenny Wright in Middletown. Served in the U.S. Navy during World War 2. He was married to Margaret Jean Bolen (1916-2003) and they had a son, Jan.

Born to Fred and Lucy Shaw in Richwood,Ohio, Shaw was a three sport star in High School, achieving success in basketball, football and track. He went on to play football for Paul Brown at OSU, continuing basketball and track there, also. He left school to serve in the U.S. Army for World War 2, and returned to not only play professional basketball, but played in the NFL, too, for four seasons. He wound up coaching football for many years in the NFL and CFL, and eventually back at the college level. He died in 2011 following a brief illness at 89 years of age.

He married Mary Hawkins (d. 2007)  on January 22, 1944, and they had a son, Webb, and a daughter, Amy.

A star high school athlete out of Youngstown, he wound up playing football and basketball at Youngstown State, scoring 1400 points on the court in his time there.

Born to Serbian immigrants, Petar "Press" Maravich played in the NBL and BAA, but is better known as a collegiate coach. While at LSU, he coached his son, Pete, who set the NCAA scoring record and is on  of the greatest basketball players the world has ever known,

Maravich spent World War 2 in the U.S.Navy.

Maravich was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1985. Although diagnosed early, Maravich attempted holistic methods of treatment which allowed the disease to progress. He died in 1987.

Brother of Pete Lalich.


Nick Lalich has one of the more remarkable biographies of the NBL. Born to Serbian immigrants in Lorain, Ohio, Lalich grew up in Cleveland and attended Ohio University, where he played basketball while obtaining a bachelor's degree in industrial arts, and went on to Columbia for his master's degree. He return to Cleveland to teach, but World War 2 erupted, and he entered the U.S. Army.
While in the army, it was determined that his knowledge of the Serbian language and culture would make him an asset to the OSS, now known as the CIA. Lalich became a key figure in the war in Europe, leading the Halyard Operation. This operation involved going into enemy territory in Yugoslavia and rescue downed Allied pilots. In four months of operation in 1944, Lalich and his crews rescued around 550 airmen with losing a single pilot or man. In the dark of night, Lalich and his crews flew C-47's into occupied territory, often landing in fields, to pick up the airmen.
After the war, Lalich worked for the CIA in Greece, staying there until 1957. He returned to the US to work as an account executive for Kenyon & Eckhardt. He moved to Baltimore to work the the Department of Commerce. He died in 2001 after a bout with esophageal cancer.
Lalich was married to  Mira Vukcevich (d. 1993) and had at least one daughter, Stephanie.
