Kelly, measuring in at 6'0 in height, was the first player to score 1000 career points with at Manhattan. He wold go to the Scranton Miners of the ABL after graduating, and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. When he returned from service, he played a couple more years while getting a Masters Degree in Education at Seton Hall. He went on to teach and coach for many years in the New Jersey school system, as will as work first as an assistant coach, and later as the head coach, at Saint Peter's College. After two unsuccessful seasons at the helm there, he was fired as coach but still worked with youths on the sport at the Lou Carnasecca summer camps.

He married Marian Leane and they had five children.
