A star basketball player at the University of Evansville, Hafele played some independent basketball before joining the Agogans when they joined the NPBL. Hafele was a long-time coach and teacher who also played a great deal of semi-pro baseball around Indiana.

He married Ida Mae in 1950 and they had two daughters and two sons.
