Swanson was a two-sport athlete at Illinois, playing both baseball and basketball. After college, he played in the St. Louis Cardinals' farm system, as well as a brief appearance with Hammond on the court.
He worked as a coach at Illinois after graduating, and later became the superintendent for the Chicago Heights Park District as well as commissioner.
He married Doris (1924-2007) and they had a daughter, Nancy McDonald, and two sons, Douglas and David.
