Hammond Times, February 18, 1938, has article about Whiting signing Marty Cullen and Willie Young. Young is described as the "former Wisconsin ace."

Update 3/22/2017
While searching for Chicago Duffy Florals player Harry Lucas, I noticed he had played some semi-pro ball with a Willis Young. Since Lucas and Young were also teammates for the Florals in the MBC, I think we found that "Willie" is not "William" but "Willis". Looking through Chicago-area newspapers, I find repeated references to Willis who is apparently from Delphi, Indiana (which is near Lafayette). Some poking around genealogical websites and I find a family of Youngs from Delphi in the early 20th century with a Willis V. Young who was born in 1909 and died in 1981. All these pieces seem to fit.

Update 6/16/2020
Willis Verl Young was found to be 5'6, which is not close the the 6'1 height listed as the player. So I did some more searching and found Willis George Young who was 6'1 and is more than likely the correct guy.

We already know all about John Wooden, I will keep it brief. Graduated from Purdue, and then taught high school, coached high school basketball, and played professionally until World War 2. After WW2, returned to coach at Indiana State, and then on to UCLA where he became a legend with ten NCAA championships. He married Nellie Riley (1912-1985) in 1932 and the couple had a son, James, and a daughter, Nancy. He was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1960.

His brother, Maurice "Cat" Wooden, was a teammate of John's for a few years with the Kautskys.

The son of a Czech immigrant born and raised in Whiting, "Bull" Sotak played basketball in High School at Catholic Central, and then played four seasons in the NBL. He began working at the Whiting Standard Oil Refinery in 1939 and worked there until 1980. He also served in the Coast Guard during World War 2. He married Vernamae Spisak (1918-2008) in 1941 and the couple had a daughter, Emily Ann Huizenga, and three sons, Mark, Ralph (1946-1972) and David (1951-2007). He died at his home in Whiting in 2007.

Perigo was born in Marion (or maybe Lebanon), Indiana, to Lon (1886-1958) and Neva Laham Perigo (1889-1955). He graduated from Delphi High School, and attended Western Michigan University. He played professionally basketball through the 1930's, including two years in the NBL. We wound up being the head coach at his alma mater WMU, and then at the University of Michigan. He died in 1990. He married Margaret E. Burrell (1913-1999) in 1934 and had two daughters, Pat Gonser and Beth Nagle, and a son, Don Perigo.

Born Arnold William Haarlow, Jr., Bill Harlow went to Bowen High School in Chicago and became the first Chicago prep to score 50 points in a game. He was a two-time All-American at the University of Chicago and went on to play professionally for Whiting. He was one of the pioneers of the jump shot. He refereed Big Ten games for 12 seasons, while working at Illinois Bell until his retirement in 1974. He married Margaret Noble (1913-2008) in 1938 and had three sons, Arnold (1941-2002), John and Robert, and a daughter, Margaret Wright. Haarlow died in Hinsdale, Illinois in 2003.

Gunning was from Shelbyville, Indiana, attending Shelbyville High School, and played basketball at Indiana University  from 1934-1937. He played in the NBL for one season for Whiting, and then played briefly for Indianapolis after World War 2. A talented baseball player, Gunning also put in some time with Moline in the 3-I League in 1939. He went on to coach at Connorsville High School.

He was married to Ruth and they had three sons and one daughter.

Born in 1915 in Chicago, Campion graduated from St. George High School in Evanston, Illinois, in 1933. He went on to play basketball at DePaul, graduating in 1937, and then in the NBL for two seasons. He married Frances Sturm (1915-1988) in 1940. They went to the Salinas Valley in California on their honeymoon, and moved there shortly thereafter. Campion served in the Navy during World War 2, and after the war, worked with Lewis Tervin Company, and later purchased the company along with 6 other employees and renamed it the Merit Packing Company. Campion sold the business years later and retired in 1979.
Campion was inducted to the Illinois High School Basketball Hall of Fame and the DePaul Basketball Hall of Fame. He and Frances had one son (Chip) and four daughters (Mary, Ginny, Josie, and Liz.) He died in Salinas in 2005.

While searching for another player, I found an article that mentioned Arndt playing for the Hammond Optimists. This little clue gave me the incentive to dig deeper. From the Hammond Times, June 12, 1939, I found a wedding announcement for the afore-mentioned Mary Ellen Bussell and Fred. The article refers to the bridegroom as being "known for his athletic ability" at Hammond High School and he went to Purdue. At the time of the marriage, he was working at Inland Steel. This essentially confirms that we have the correct Fred Arndt.

Born to Fred (1893-1960) and Anne (1889-1966) Arndt, Fred Jr. excelled at basketball at Hammond High School. He went to Purdue, but I cannot find information that he actually played basketball there. He worked at Inland steel as well as at Indiana University's auxiliary campus in the Hammond area. In retirement, he spent the winter months in Florida before returning permanently to Indiana, where he died in 2002.

He married Mary Ellen Bussell (1917-2011) on June 3, 1939. They had a son, Steve, and a daughter, Nancy Hardesty.

Whiting Ciesar All-Americans (located in Indiana) went 12-3 and finished second in the Western Division. They lost to Oshkosh in the semi-finals. The team was known as Hammond after this season.

Wickhorst started as a player for the Chicago Bruins for a time, and was a player/coach for the Whiting Macks prior to taking the helm for the All-Americans. He stayed on as coach for three seasons there.
