Michelotti was born to Italian immigrants Raniere and Cortese Michelotti. He was a long-time-professional basketball player and also a fireman for Ladder 116 in New York City.

He was injured in a firefight on April 9, 1948, and eventually died of his injuries almost two years later. He was only 41. He was honored before a Long Island basketball game with a gold watch in gratitude for his years of basketball prowess. This occurred just a month before the incident that would eventually take his life.

He was married to Grace.

  1. has him as "Nicholas" but you list him as "Michael" without any mention of the discrepancy. I assume "Michael" is indeed his correct given name?

  2. From all the records I find in Ancestry and from FDNY, his name is Michael. I couldn't find any reference to him being "Nicholas"

(Glad to see my blog is being read :) )

  3. All the time. You do good work!

  4. He was my great uncle. He was always spoken highly of. He died before I was born. I never knew what his injuries were.
