Fitts was born to Tandy Bouge and Altie Mae Trusty Fitts, in Smithville, Tennessee. He played college basketball at Akron before joining the Wingfoots for two years. He was employed at Goodyear for 45 years.

Fitts married Exie Burton (1911-1988) on December 7, 1940, and they had two daughters, Judy Lochmann and Sherry Hohman.
