Cope was born in Columbiana, Ohio, to Joseph (1885-1971) and Delpha Kridler (1888-1983). He grew up in Salem, Ohio, and was the star of the basketball team there before moving on to Mount Union. He joined Akron Goodyear, and worked at Goodyear for 25 years. He later moved to Joliet, Illinois, to work in sales for Deaton Kennedy. Afterwards he moved to New Jersey, where he died in 1995.
Cope was married to Bettina Bartle (1915-2006) on November 4, 1939. They had a son and a daughter.
