Born in Indiana to Louis and Rose Harmon, Lou grew up in Gary, Indiana. Harmon played pro basketball for Goodyear. After living in Akron, where he got married, he got a job with Ford Motor Company and moved to the Detroit area.
Lou's brother was Tom Harmon, who was a football star at the University of Michigan and later played in the NFL.
He married Agnes McGarry in 1940 and they had two sons and a daughter.
