Born to Bernard and Florence Van Faasen in Holland, Michigan, Arnold starred at Christian HS before heading to Michigan State, where the center became one of the school's all-time greats. Graduating in 1935, he took a job at the Michigan Vocational School for boys, with some time off to play professional basketball for the Hed Aids in the Midwestern Conference.
In early August of 1936, Van Faasen had an emergency appendectomy. He was on the mend when a secondary illness (probably an infection) struck him, and he died of the 15th of that month. He was only 24 years of age.
