Born to Jacob and Helen Roth, Bobby went to school at Wayne State in Detroit. He dropped out of school after his sophomore year to help the family survive during the recession. He intended to return to college, at nearby University of Detroit, but the rules of the era stated that once a player started varsity basketball at once school he could not play varsity at another, so he returned to Wayne State. After graduating, he played pro and semi-pro basketball around Detroit with an interruption due to World War 2. After the war, he played for the House of David barnstorming team for almost a decade,
Married to Gertrude Drake (1916-2013) in 1949 and they had one son.
