Shaw played basketball at Southeastern HS in Detroit before playing at the University of Michigan. He played for the Windsor team in the Midwestern League, and later served in the U.S. Navy during World War 2. In 1949, he took the head coaching job at Williams College, where he stayed for 24 years and accumulated a 324-104 record. He was also an assistant football coach and lacrosse coach there.
Shaw remained in Massachusetts in retirement before dying at the age of 102.
He married Marion Davis in 1935 and they had one son. They were married a remarkable 74 years.
