Born to Harry and Jane Davis, "Big Bill" played basketball at Notre Dame and then for four seasons professionally. He served in the military during World War 2. He became friends with Gerald Ford while playing with the Rangers (Ford was the club's business manager) and later operated an Insurance and Real Estate office in Riverdale, Illinois.
He married Mary Ann Collinsworth and they had a daughter and a son.
