Leib was a star basketball player and tennis player in high school and playing both at NYU, he want on to play professional basketball before focusing full time to teaching and coaching. He took Lincoln HS to a state title as a coach a mere twenty years after playing on Lane HS's championship team.
He married Esther Sherman (1915-2010) in 1940 and they had two children.
