1948-49 ATLANTIC CITY TIDES / PHILADELPHIA SPHA's
AMERICAN BASKETBALL LEAGUE (II)
8-26 .235, 8th place
The Philadelphia SPHA's headed to a new hometown for this season: Atlantic City. In January, the Tides (as they were now known), unable to draw that well, returned to Philly and to their SPHA's moniker.
They started the season hot, winning 6 of their first seven games. However, their fortunes turned sour quickly, losing 16 games in a row and only winning twice more for the remainder of the season.

Bill is an oddity, in that I cannot find anything about him with regards to whereabouts after his playing years. My assumptions are that A) Zubic is a shortened name, and B) Despite being called Bill, his given name is not "William." Name could also be Zobec, Zubyk, Zbik or Zubiac

I was correct that his name was shortened. Real last name is Bezubic. I poked around ancestry sites and came across the name "Bezubic" and from there found a William born in 1918. (Bill Zubic was mentioned as being 30 in the 1948-49 season. Finding William Bezubic'd draft card, it listed the man as 6'5 and 211 pounds. Now 95% certain I was right, I found that "Big Bill Bezubic" played basketball for the Chester Ukrainians. The newspaper article I saw called him Bezubic inthe story, but his name was listed as Zubic in the accompanying box score.

100% properly identified.
After serving in World War 2, Zubic embarked on a lengthy career in professional and semi-professional basketball around Pennsylvania. He was a top scorer while in the Eastern League, and would play through the 1950's.

Getchell signed with the NFL's Pittsburgh Eagles in 1946, but did not make the team. He played basketball that winter for the Ironmen, and in 1947 returned to the gridiron, playing 8 games for the Baltimore Colts.

After playing basketball and baseball at Duke, McCahan played in the Philadelphia Athletics minor league system, with an interruption in his pitching career where he was a test pilot in the Air Corps. He came back from the war and eventually made it to the Athletics, playing for Connie Mack for 4 seasons. He also threw a no-hitter in which he was an error away from a perfect game.
McCahan died of cancer in 1986.
He was married to Marie (b.1920).
