Some changes were afoot for the 1948-49 season of the Eastern League of Connecticut. The League split back up into two division. The Bridgeport team had a new sponsor, and the league added teams in Middletown and Manchester to replace Stamford and Naugatuck. The league set out with each team scheduled to play a 20-game season with 4 games against each divisional foe and 2 games against each team in the other division.
The winners of the championship the last two seasons, the Bristol Tramps, didn't win their division but finished in second place, while Torrington won the other division. The Danbury Fedoras were in first place in the Colonial Division with a week left in the season but they had to drop due to serious financial losses. Their remaining two games, against Middletown and Torrington, were not played.
The playoffs were a different format than years' past, with the top two teams in each division meeting in a round-robin. With Danbury out, third place Wallingford was included. Bristol and Wallingford finished the round robin with identical 4-2 records and were declared co-champions.
