He served in the military during World War 2, and after the war, operated a surplus store in Xenia, Ohio.

Padlow, who never married, died in an automobile accident two days past his 59th birthday in 1971.

Willis (Willie) Young (Whiting Ciesar) Identified

While searching for Chicago Duffy Florals player Harry Lucas, I noticed he had played some semi-pro ball with a Willis Young. Since Lucas and Young were also teammates for the Florals in the MBC, I think we found that "Willie" is not "William" but "Willis". Looking through Chicago-area newspapers, I find repeated references to Willis who is apparently from Delphi, Indiana (which is near Lafayette). Some poking around genealogical websites and I find a family of Youngs from Delphi in the early 20th centurt with a Willis V. Young who was born in 1909 and died in 1981. All these pieces seem to fit.

One of the earliest stars of the New York basketball world, Hirsch played for 11 years on various clubs around his hometown Rochester. He worked with the Jewish Youth Association until 1947 when he retired to run Camp Cherokee at Saranac Lake. After running the camp, which catered to youths, he returned JY, where he stayed until 1968 when he retired to North Miami Beach in Florida.

In the summer of 1971, Hirsch went to Ottawa to visit family, and while there, he suffered a fatal heart attack.

Manny married Henrietta Cook in 1933 and they had two daughters and a son.

In February of 1930, he was declared ineligible for athletic by Butler after it was discovered he played professional baseball the previous summer under an assumed name (Roy Hilden). He signed with the Indianapolis AA baseball team in 1930, and by 1931 found himself taking the hill for the Cleveland Indians. In 1933, he won a career-high 16 games and was named to represent the Indians in the first All-Star game. He won 83 games over his 10-year Major League career.

After his baseball career, he work as a die maker st the FMC Corporation, retiring in 1972.

He married Frances Bradley and had two daughters and three sons.

There was another player named Harrington who played at BU in 1925-26. I don't think it is him, given the large break that would have occurred in his collegiate career. He was definitely the player in 1931 and 1923, though.

He married Gemaine Touzen (1908-1992) and moved to Connecticut in 1938, later returning to Pennsylvania where he died in 1994.

Born to Max and Celia Gussin, Carl went to Central HS where he played basketball and tennis. He attended Alma and in 1929 was involved in an automobile accident that injured his knee and he missed the remainder of the season. After graduating, he went on to the University of Detroit to go to dental school. While finishing up dental school, he played pro basketball with the Hed-Aids in the MBC. He served in the U.S. Army during World War 2.

He married Bertha Weinstein in 1946 and they had one daughter.

There is another Carl Gussin in the Detroit area roughly the same age who went to Wayne State and then got his law degree at the University of Michigan. He is a different guy and not the basketball player.

Not sure about the birthdate. Year seems good, but date itself is unconfirmed.

Gallagher played some pro basketball for the Bisons in his home town of Buffalo, but he was a talented baseball player who signed with the Yankees in 1936. He climbed through the minor league to joining the parent club in 1939. In June of 1939 he was dealt to the St. Louis Brown, and a year later to the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Gallagher enlisted in the army in 1941 and served during World War 2. After the war, he returned to baseball, playing for Brooklyn's farm team in MOntreal where he was Jackie Robinson's roommate.

Joe married Josephine Cariker (1902-1983)

The son of a former Major League pitcher, Crouch and the family moved to Highland Park, Michigan, and Crouch went to Michigan Normal in Ypsi (now Eastern Michigan.)

Crouch pursued a baseball career, signing with Scottdale in the Mid Atlantic League in 1931. He bounced around the minors for a few seasons, even playing some pro basketball in the Detroit area. In 1938, he won 21 games for Nashville in the Brooklyn Dodgers farm system, good enough to get him called up to the big club in 1939. He bounced between the minors and the major leagues over the next half dozen years or so, with time on the Phillies and Cardinals as well as the Dodgers. He hung up his spikes and finished his education, and wound up teaching and coaching baseball at Eastern Michigan for over 20 years.

Bill and his wife, Florence, had one daughter.

Identifying Junior Byard was difficult. Searching newspapers, I found he did indeed attend Ferris, played basketball in Detroit in the DBA, and even found a box score from his high school days at Detroit Nothern. So where to go from there? Searching "Junior Byard" in Michigan in genealogy records yielded nothing. But assuming he was born roughly in 1910, a just started looking at every "Byard" in Wayne county in the 1920 census who had the same name as his father. That got me to a Perry Byard. Okay, so Perry Byard was a "junior" in Wayne County, but was he the "Junior Byard" who played basketball?

The answer to that question is "Yes." I found an article in the Detroit Free Press saying the Perry Byard, a very skilled golfer, was also on the Detroit Northern HS Championshp basketball team. So hooray for me! Mystery solved.

Born in West Virginia to Perry and Rosalie, Perry and the family moved to Detroit for better prospects. Byard took to basketball and golf, and later in life was an accomplished golf pro in Michigan. He was also president of Southeastern Broach, Inc., at the time of his death.

Junior married Mary Begle (1917-1999) in 1939. They had a son, Mark (1946-1965) and two daughters, including Sharon (1942-1942).

Player is listed on some encyclopedias as Ray Bottema (1920-1980) of Indianapolis. Although Ray did play basketball for a year at Butler after World War 2, he would have only been 15 years old when he signed with the Kautskys in 1935, so I found it highly unlikely this is the correct player. (He would have been a sophomore in high school at the time, and that makes little sense.) Ray wound being a dairy farmer, and died of a heart attack in 1980.

So who is this Bottema player?

An article in the December 19, 1938, issue of the Indianapolis Star mention a basketball player named Herm Bottema playing for the Hilgemeier Packers. The article also mentions his teammates included Cy Proffitt, who also played on the MBC's Kautskys, as well as Leo Crowe, who played for the Kautskys when they joined the NBL in 1937-38. Another box score from a different game mentions Harlan Wilson, who also played for the Kautskys in the MBC. All the evidence leads to this player being Herm Bottema and not Ray Bottema.
