Born to Isaac (1889-1943) and Malinda Goolsby Apple (1888-1968) in Cookville, Tennessee, Carl and his family moved to Detroit in the late 1910's. He attended Western High School in Detroit, but did not play basketball until after high school. He played basketball around Detroit for many years, with a reputation as a hard-nosed player.

He married Eleanor Polczynski, had two sons.
