Born to Thomas and Beulah Cottom in Indiana, Norm starred at Wiley High School before playing college basketball at Purdue. After playing briefly with the Kautskys, he taught high school social studies and coached baseball and basketball at Alexandria HS and Gerstmeyer HS before serving in the military for World War 2. After his discharge, he returned to Wiley HS to coach and teach. He later moved to California, where he died in 1972 after a lengthy illness.

He was married to Ethyl Wagner (1914-1980)
