After graduating from high school, Lavoy entered the U.S. Army and served in teh European Theater during World War 2, including seeing action in the Battle of the Buige. He enrolled at Illinois, but was declared academically ineligible in January of 1947. After the school year, he transferred to Western Kentucky where he would play the next 3 years. He was a first round draft pick in the 1950 draft, selected by the Indanapolis Olympians. When the Olympians folded three years later, Lavoy was drafted by the Hawks in a Dispersal Draft. We had traded November 23, 1953 to Syracuse for Noble Jorgensen.

Lavoy would go on to coach high school basketball before landing the top coach job at the University of Tanpa.

He and his wife, Sara Jane, had two daughters.
